A Brief Description of our Post-Graduate Diploma in International Midwifery and Maternal/Child Health:

Mercy In Action is committed to maternal and newborn survival, one good birth at a time. With this goal in mind, we have created a Post-Graduate Midwifery Diploma Program that has the potential to save lives and make a lasting difference in the global maternity care crisis.

Empowering midwives in low-resource countries is at the heart of this diploma training, both in learning from them, and being prepared to teach continuing education, based on the belief that when maternal and newborn survival is the issue, skilled midwives are an evidence-based solution! Become part of the solution as you earn credentials as a Mercy In Action Diploma Scholar!

This Diploma program is practical and feasible for busy birth workers. The academic portion of the program consists of self-study to fit around your busy on-call life. Phase III is a four-day “Train the Trainer” workshop session which you can attend at any point in the program. Phase IV wraps everything up with a final project.

Note: Phase III, the Workshop, is allowed to be taken out of order, as it is only taught once or twice a year.

Upon successful completion, the Diploma in International Maternal/Child Health will be issued. Licensed or Certified Midwives will be granted a Diploma in International Midwifery and Maternal/Child Health.

This interactive simulator called NeoNatalie can be donated to allow local midwives to continue training in a "Low Dose, High Frequency" methodology long after the trainer has gone home, thereby improving maternal/child health and welfare for untold thousands in future years.

Benefits of the Diploma program:

1.  Better Childbirth Survival: This training will prepare you to train others, and teach them to train others, in vital life-saving skills. As our Diploma students graduate and teach in areas of poverty, we expect to see more respectful and humane child birth practices adopted, and evidence-based care given during common emergencies such as hemorrhage and birth asphyxia. The real winners in this program are the recipients of better maternity care in low resource areas—the mothers, the newborn babies, and the families who love them!

2.  Advanced Practice Knowledge: This diploma will demonstrate that you have studied maternal/child health on a global scale, far beyond what is customary for a midwife or birth worker from a western country. It will equip you for conditions you will encounter when volunteering or serving in low-resource, high mortality countries in the future, and will help guide and inform where you give your future donation dollars toward improving maternal/child health.

Training in the life-saving Non-pneumatic Anti-shock Garment (NASG) for midwives in the Philippines.

3.  Continuing Education and updated Skills Training for you: The hands-on training you will get is known and respected globally - the AAP Helping Babies Survive series, the Jhpiego “Helping Mothers Survive” series, and the ICI Steps to Optimal MotherBaby Maternity Services, have all been tested and proven to improve birth outcomes. In addition, the accredited CEUs earned may be used toward your midwife license or certification renewal. As globally aware midwives we must always stay up-to-date on the latest innovations to save the lives of mothers and newborns, as well as stay updated on unique health conditions common to people living in abject poverty. This Diploma program is a great way to do that, while earning credentials that will further your future professional goals and dreams.

And finally, as you share your knowledge after earning this diploma, you can bring vital continuing education and updated skills training for local midwives, doctors and nurses in the countries where you go.

Expected time-frame to complete the Diploma is 1-3 years, and extensions after 3 years are available by paying another administration fee. It is absolutely doable to finish in one year if you devote just a few hours per week to the coursework.

For what it is, this is a very affordable diploma program. There is an application fee of $50, and a one-time administration fee of $799. The workshop fee is $980, and includes MEAC Accredited CEU hours you can use toward professional license or certification renewal. All fees are non-refundable. The cost for books will vary depending on if you borrow or buy used books, and the cost for travel and lodging to the live training will vary as well.

Assignments are completed at your own pace and submitted by email. The live workshop will be offered by us approximately once per year in the USA and sometimes in other countries, and you can take it at any time, no matter what phase you are in.

APPLY TODAY: Submit your completed application and the application fee, then ask someone who knows you well to fill out the reference form; you will be notified of acceptance within 2-3 weeks of receipt of the application fee, completed application, reference form, and any applicable documents. Thank you!
