Bachelor of Science in Midwifery
Mercy In Action College of Midwifery is a Degree-Granting, community-based Distance program, accredited by the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC), which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Upon graduation, students earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Midwifery, and qualify to become nationally certified as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) with the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM.) Graduates who pass the NARM board exam qualify for Idaho licensing and licensing in states that recognize the CPM credential. In every midwifery school, students learn about pregnancy, birth and babies. What Mercy In Action College of Midwifery models is how to be a midwife who is also a compassionate and responsible global citizen. Throughout your midwifery degree, you will learn how excellence in midwifery knowledge, skills and attitude can positively impact the ability of mothers and babies to survive and thrive, both in the United States and around the world. Graduates will be prepared for practice in home or birth center settings. A CPM is able to conduct normal deliveries and provide for all aspects of maternity care, including the timely provision of emergency measures and transfer to a higher level of care should it become necessary.
Our mission is to train competent, compassionate midwives of excellence to serve women, infants, and families during pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond. We desire to train culturally aware, globally minded midwives who can practice evidence-based midwifery according to the Midwives Model of Care™.
Distance Classes
Electronic curriculum & Online Classrooms
The College curriculum and online classrooms are accessible via a web-based learning management system. Students use the online platform to receive and submit assignments, participate in discussion boards with fellow students, and take tests. Our distance format allows students to complete their academic and clinical work in their home communities, while still having the advantage of interacting with fellow students and teachers during regularly scheduled live web classes.
The curriculum is aligned with the educational requirements of the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council, North American Registry of Midwives, and the International Confederation of Midwives. In addition, the Mercy In Action College of Midwifery aligns itself with the Midwives Model of Care™, the International Childbirth Initiative, the World Health Organization Safe Motherhood Initiative, the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative, and the White Ribbon Alliance Respectful Maternity Care Initiative, as well as other global initiatives and projects to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity worldwide.
Local learning
Community-Based Preceptorship
Students remain in their own communities to study and begin an internship with an established midwife as a qualified preceptor for clinical experience. Clinical experience includes attending births, prenatal and postpartum exams and newborn check-ups. The online distance format allows students to complete their course work at a distance while attending births in the setting of their own choosing (see the Professional Licensing page for state by state information regarding which states are allowed for apprenticeship). At times, a student will choose to relocate to take a clinical placement somewhere else, since academics can be done from almost anywhere in the United States.

Goals
The program goals for Mercy In Action College of Midwifery’s Bachelor of Science in Midwifery are as follows:
1) Skilled, respectful and evidence-based care: Our Bachelor program seeks to train midwives of excellence and technical skill who are prepared to practice evidence based midwifery according to current best practices and the principles of respectful maternity care.
2) Global and cultural awareness: The Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program seeks to prepare culturally sensitive, globally aware graduates who are trained to apply evidence based practices to address the crisis in maternity care worldwide.
3) National certification: Our program aims to prepare graduates for national certification by the North American Registry of Midwives as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of Mercy In Action College of Midwifery’s Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program, graduates will be prepared to:
1) Utilize a MotherBaby-Family-centered approach to respectful maternity care in accordance with the principles of the International Childbirth Initiative (ICI) and the Midwives Model of Care ™ with the knowledge and skills to:
Manage the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum period for essentially healthy clients/patients
Collaboratively co-manage or make referrals for complications of the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum period in accordance with scope of practice
Manage the care of the normal newborn
Refer for complications of the newborn period in accordance with scope of practice
Apply an ethical framework to the provision of midwifery care.
2) Provide culturally relevant client/patient education to foster health promotion and disease prevention in accordance with principles of respectful maternity care.
3) Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic populations.
4) Develop practice guidelines and informed consent documents according to the professional standards of practice for Certified Professional Midwife as defined by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM).
5) Achieve Certified Professional Midwife designation by successfully passing the North American Registration of Midwives exam.
International Midwifery
The College of Midwifery, under its non-profit faith-based 501(c)(3) parent organization Mercy In Action Vineyard, Inc, has been involved in a very practical way both academically and clinically in global maternal/newborn health for decades. The College's curriculum reflects this global perspective, training future midwives to be prepared to provide midwifery care in the United States or globally, being aware of the special considerations of women and children in low-resource areas of the world. Mercy in Action in the Philippines has delivered more than 17,000 babies since 1991, with excellent outcomes for both babies and mothers.
